Role Description

Avian Behaviour and Training Consultant - Melbourne

  • Casual Contractor
  • Melbourne Based

Parrot Life® Behaviour and Training is a parrot behaviour consultancy designed to enhance communication and understanding between parrots and their owners/keepers through positive reinforcement based training and applied behaviour analysis (ABA). Clients can be any sized establishment; from companion animal owners with one parrot, to zoos, wildlife parks or conservation centres. We have branches in New Zealand, Perth, Brisbane, Sydney and operate internationally via online video consultations.

We are looking to expand Parrot Life®’s in-home consultation services into the Melbourne Metropolitan Area, so are looking for the right person to become our Melbourne contractor!! Due to the very “particular set of skills, skills that you have acquired over a long career” (thanks Liam Neeson!) that you must have to fit this role, we may not hire anyone if the right candidate does not apply. As Melbourne will be a new branch for us, there will be some marketing and liaison involved in the region, and consultations may begin slowly then increase over time, so some flexibility in your current schedule is needed.

This role would suit someone already working in the animal training industry, such as those working in zoological facilities, or those that already work in animal training and behaviour modification (i.e. dog trainers who would like to ‘branch’ out into parrots). As a casual contractor you control when you book consultations in, so working for us can easily fit around other job commitments. You will join a supportive and fun team, while also working autonomously with plenty of scope to adapt your own branch.

The Avian Behaviour and Training Consultant - Melbourne will report directly to the Owner/Operator, who is based in New Zealand. Depending on your background, we may offer a voluntary training period (shadowing of consults, attending courses) prior to a staff contract.

Successful applicants must have:

  • at least 2 years working in the animal training or zoological industry
  • a proven background using applied behaviour analysis (ABA)
  • a relevant animal or behaviour based qualification
  • must have owned or lived with a parrot for a good length of time
  • own vehicle to attend consultations
  • internet access for online meetings and consultations
  • computer/Microsoft Office skills
  • eloquent writing style, social media marketing skills
  • must already have or is willing to obtain an ABN

Applicants that submit a video demonstration of them training or interacting with a parrot will be given preference. Please do not email the video file, upload to a sharing platform like Dropbox or YouTube and provide us with the link.
If you are interested in this contactor role, please email your resume and optional video demonstration link to rachel@parrotlife.com.au. Please visit www.parrotlife.com.au for more detail on the services we offer.

Applications close on 16th October 2019.
